A celebrity marriage is 50 percent more likely to end in divorce than it is for a normal person. In other words, it’s not looking good for them. The average marriage lasts around eight years, with celebrity unions typically ending somewhere within the first four years. The majority of the famous couples on this list barely cracked the 12-month mark for a variety of (often quite dramatic) reasons. Cheating, accusations of abuse, and hamfisted ratings grabs have all been propped up as the reasons for some of these disastrous nuptials.
From Nicolas Cage’s allegedly emotionally intense union with Lisa Marie Presley to Britney Spears’ infamous quickie Vegas wedding with “Average Joe” Jason Alexander, here are 16 Insanely Short Celebrity Marriages.
Charlie Sheen and Donna Peele - 15 Months
How long does romance last when you meet your future wife on the set of a cigarette commercial? It turns out: about 15 months. Charlie Sheen learned this lesson the hard way when he married Donna Peele.
Sheen announced his engagement to Peele while on the stand for Madam Heidi Fleiss’ trial. Sheen was accused of being a client of the “dating” service, at the time.
The marriage between Charlie Sheen and Donna Peele ended in 1996. After the divorce, Sheen stated, “You buy a car, it breaks down, what are you gonna do?”
Sheen has had multiple failed relationships and marriages. This includes former fiancee Kelly Preston — who Sheen accidentally shot in the arm — a divorce with Denise Richards, and a divorce with Brooke Mueller.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand - 14 Months
Katy Perry and Russell Brand made it just 14 months before Brand reportedly texted Perry to call it quits. Perry must have had love in her sights when she threw a water bottle at his head during dress rehearsals for the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards, as the two became a couple soon after the incident. They got engaged New Year’s Eve in India.
14 months into the marriage Russell Brand filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Although she apparently found out via text message, the ending of the relationship seemed fairly amicable. With no prenuptial agreement in place, half of the $44 million Katy Perry made during their marriage was vulnerable to Russell Brand. He declined to take the opportunity.
Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock - 122 Days
With wild accusations and denial running rampant in this marriage, it is not surprising that it ended very quickly. Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson’s relationship fell apart when she claimed that she lost a baby.
After Kid Rock decided to go to a basketball game he claimed, “I’m like, ‘Baby, I got these tickets. I’ll see you on the weekend there,’ and that leads into her saying, ’ You don’t care about me, blah blah blah.’” He also stated, “She finally comes up with this: ’I just had a miscarriage’ … and hangs the phone up.”
After the divorce, Kid Rock reportedly struck Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee — another one of her ex-husbands — at the 2007 VMAs. Although Anderson was the host of the VMAs that year, he claims she had nothing to do with the incident.
Bradley Cooper And Jennifer Esposito - Four Months
Guardians of the Galaxy star Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito were once a wedded couple for a total of four months. After the divorce, Esposito wrote a book entitled Jennifer’s Way: My Journey With Celiac Disease - What Doctors Don’t Tell You And How You Can Learn To Live Again, in which she references a spouse that she claimed to be cold and harsh. It is speculated that the spouse she was referring to is Bradley Cooper.
Esposito herself tried to downplay these rumors. Their engagement was announced in October of 2006, and the coupled tied the knot sometime between then and January 2007. They gave no details about the wedding. They even tried to keep their relationship a secret at the Golden Globe awards. Pretty much everything about this union was kept wrapped in mystery from beginning to end.
Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage - 108 Days
Have you ever thrown a $65,000 engagement ring in the ocean? In a fight before Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage got married, that’s exactly what happened. Presley stated that she hoped the marriage would help calm them down. After the divorce, she noted that they were both emotionally unstable and both at fault.
At one point Cage threatened her with divorce, which he eventually followed through on. She said, “The most upsetting thing was when he called to say sorry, wish he hadn’t done it, things like that.”
The total time for the union was 108 days.
Lisa Marie Presley has not had very good luck in matrimony, as she has now been divorced four times. She has divorced Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson, Danny Keough, and Michael Lockwood. Her longest-running union has been with Michael Lockwood at 10 years. She admits when it comes to choosing a partner she is “completely insane.”
Eminem and Kim Mathers - Four Months
This couple failed not once, but twice. Eminem and Kim Mathers’ first marriage ended in 2001 after a secret wedding in 1999 … which is very short, but it is their second union that takes the cake.
The second marriage between these two lovebirds lasted a total of four months.
While it may seem like nothing but bad decisions, the circuit judge handling the settlement gave them credit for how they conducted themselves throughout the proceedings.
Eminem has famously rapped about violence towards Kim Mathers. The first time Eminem asked Kim for a divorce, was shortly after she had made an attempt to take her own life in August of 2000. She responded to his request by suing him for half of their estate, and $10 million for intentional infliction of emotional distress. It is quite surprising how easily they agreed to the details of their second divorce, including child custody terms.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries - 72 Days
This marriage is unique in the fact that the divorce battle lasted seven times longer than the marriage itself. Kim Kardashian and Chris Humphries’ union lasted 72 days, 18 days less than the engagement.
On October 31st, 2011 she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. The same day Humpries issued a statement that said, “I love my wife and I am devastated to learn she filed for divorce.” With a prenup in place, most thought the split would be quick and easy, but that certainly was not the case.
The divorce took until April 19th, 2013 because the two could not reach an agreement.
Accusations came from both sides as Kardashian’s lawyer accused Humphries of trying to delay the trial for media attention. Humphries’ lawyers accused Kardashian of trying to use her pregnancy to accelerate the trial. At that time, she was pregnant with the child of Kanye West.
Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon - 60 Days
Pamela Anderson twice married Rick Salomon, and it did not work out either time.
Their second marriage lasted a whopping 60 days.
Pamela Anderson remarried Salomon claiming that she had “forgotten a lot” — meaning a lot of the negatives of their first marriage.
Throughout the divorce, Anderson had made claims that Salomon was bad in bed. Salomon claimed he had text messages from her to support his allegation that she was lying.
Anderson also decided to keep Bumblebee — Rick Salomon’s dog — hostage for a week. Bumblebee ended up back with his owner, so it worked out.
Anderson made claims that Rick was trying to avoid paying taxes on a $40 million gambling win, but after finalizing the second divorce Anderson found herself a million dollars richer and telling Ellen Degeneres she was going to be dating again.
Milla Jovovich and Shawn Andrews - 60 Days
This marriage only lasted 60 days because Milla Jovovich got exactly what she wanted out of her relationship with Shawn Andrews: a bank card. At the young age of 16, Jovovich left home to marry an actor; this rebellion was meant to prove a point to her mother. Jovovich stated in an interview, “I’m not even into actors; I can’t bear men who are constantly aware of themselves and their looks.”
The Resident Evil star did all of this in an attempt to establish herself as an adult saying, ”It wasn’t about being in love, but when you’re 16 you have to take three rights to make a left.”
Jovovich has since married Paul WS Anderson and they have one daughter, Ever Gabo. She did learn from her experience stating, “I wouldn’t allow my daughter to do what I did.”
Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas - 39 Days
Drew Barrymore, at the young age of 19, decided to marry 31-year-old bar owner Jeremy Thomas. Barrymore then moved in with the bar owner stating, “Usually people live together first and then get married. I guess we’re doing it the old-fashioned way. Kind of.”
The “old-fashioned” marriage lasted for 39 days.
Barrymore has actually had a pretty rocky love life. She has been divorced from Tom Green and Will Kopelman. She has also had a string of unsuccessful relationships with many big names such as Edward Norton, Luke Wilson, Justin Long, and The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti.
It does seem as though she has found personal peace despite those failing relationships and her very early substance use. Barrymore has since calmed down, becoming a happy mother and successful film producer. She currently stars in Netflix’s popular zombie comedy, Santa Clarita Diet.
Axl Rose and Erin Everly - 26 Days
Axl Rose married the woman he wrote the song “Sweet Child O’ Mine” about on April 28th, 1990. In a proposal that involved the threat of killing himself, Erin Everly accepted this generous offer.
26 days into the marriage Axl Rose filed for divorce, but later changed his mind.
In January 1991 the marriage between them was annulled after accusations of physical abuse. Since the marriage was annulled Everly was not able to get a financial settlement.
Axl Rose was notorious for his antics on and off stage. In 1994, Everly filed charges against the Guns N’ Roses vocalist for physical abuse. She was later subpoenaed for another case involving Stephanie Seymour — another of Axl’s ex-girlfriends — involving physical abuse. Axl Rose has continued on with GNR, releasing the album Chinese Democracy in 2010.
Sinead O’Connor and Barry Herridge - 18 Days
Infamous singer Sinead O’Connor took to her website to announce her split from Barry Herridge after 18 days of marriage. O’Connor seemed to take a large part of the blame, stating that her ex-husband had been unhappy.
She called out people close to him for having negative feelings about the union, which lasted 18 days.
Things weren’t all bad for the briefly married couple, O’Connor proudly claimed to have gotten married in a very “Rock ‘n’ Roll” pink Cadillac.
The singer is famous for shocking fans with her outlandish performances and her tumultuous personal life. She made a name for herself with her bad behavior by ripping up a photo of the Pope live on SNL and spitting on her “Nothing Compares 2 U” songwriter, Prince.
Ali Landry and Mario Lopez - 18 Days
Saved by the Bell actor,and Extra host Mario Lopez married Ali Landry for 18 days. He claims that his bachelor party was supposed to be fishing for marlin, but he changed his plans to a tour of “Cabo, Acapulco, all these places.”
Later, Landry was shown a photograph of Lopez in a compromising position.
Seven years later, in an interview with Howard Stern, he admitted that he had cheated on Landry just a few days before they walked down the aisle.
In reflection over the incident, Lopez stated, “I dealt with all this drama and at that point … I finally got the balls to say ‘Hey, listen I’m not ready for this, I’m sorry.’”
Both have now re-married with Mario Lopez wedding Courtney Mazza and Ali Landry wedding Alejandro Monteverde.
Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds - Two Weeks
The actor/comedian, who has done everything from his hilarious stand up special Raw to voicing a donkey in Shrek, was involved in one of Hollywood’s shortest marriages.
Just two weeks after their purely ceremonial wedding, Tracey Edmonds and Eddie Murphy released a statement to People magazine that read, “After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further.”
According to a source at People magazine, Murphy would yell at Edmonds in front of people during their honeymoon. Murphy has had several high profile relationships and 9 children from a variety of mothers. Edmonds has also had some high profile relationships as well, though not as many. She has been with Deion Sanders since 2013.
Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman - 9 Days
Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra once tied the knot for nine days. Although the Las Vegas chapel manager said that Dennis Rodman, “Walked in and out fine,” Rodman’s lawyer stated that, “Obviously anyone that would marry somebody that was intoxicated to the point that they couldn’t speak or stand had ulterior motives of some sort.” This would be the beginning of the end for the couple.
Court officials at the time had 10 days to submit the documentation to the Clark County Recorder’s Office to be recorded.
Nine days in, Electra and Rodman mutually agreed to end the marriage.
During these nine days, it is reported that they didn’t see one another. Reflecting on the short marriage Electra said, “It was so spontaneous, and I remember right after, ‘Oh god, what did we do?’”
Britney Spears and Jason Alexander - 55 Hours
Pop sensation Britney Spears married Jason Alexander for a total of 55 hours. According to ABC News, that amount of time is 1/1274th as long as the average American marriage ending in divorce.
The two got married in The Little White Chapel, which resides in Las Vegas. Jason Alexander claims to have learned something from this while debacle, stating, “Nice guys finish last. Look out for yourself. If you are really going to get involved into a relationship with a celebrity and you are just an Average Joe, make sure you are thinking business!”
A short nine months later, Spears moved on to marrying Kevin Federline. The union ended two months after the birth of their second child when Spears filed for divorce.
