The latest Injustice 2 introduces a key element of the upcoming game, known as the Gear System. For fans of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the announcement that a sequel game was in the works came as no surprise. With just over a month left until Injustice 2 hits shelves across the globe, the marketing campaign for the sequel game is going stronger than ever. The game’s creators are promising the most extensive roster in DC video game history with Injustice 2, so there are (naturally) big expectations that come with that promise.

Bringing some of the most recognizable names in the world of DC comic books to video game platforms once more, the Injustice 2 campaign mode features a story that builds on the events of the first Injustice. That isn’t the only noteworthy feature that the game has, either.

Following the release of The Flash gameplay video for Injustice 2, the latest trailer/video for the game has dropped. This time, the focus is on the various ways players are going to be able to power up their favourite superheroes and villains with the newly-added Gear System during Injustice 2. You can check out the new teaser video above.

For the first time, gear is going to be customizable and will bring boosts to base stats, as well as allowing heroes and villains to gain access to new abilities. Full sets of gear will also be up for grabs, and when sets are completed and worn by a particular character, they’ll be more powerful than ever before. Developers are promising that this means players of different skill levels will be able to turn their favourite characters into the perfect brawling machine for their fighting style.

Of course, when bringing a system such as this into a game like Injustice 2, creators run the risk of adding a complicated layer to a title that arguably didn’t need any adjustments. For those who like their fighting games simple and enjoy mashing buttons rather than customizing outfits and costumes, this could be a bit of a turn-off.

Then again, there are those who will enjoy this addition. Those behind the game are clearly taking steps to prevent the Injustice 2 gaming experience from getting stale quickly, bringing new aspects of gameplay on board so that there are too many overt similarities between this game and the original Injustice. The Gear System should bring a new depth to the Injustice franchise - and for those who prefer this advanced personalization of playing style, that can only be a good thing.

Injustice 2 arrives on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 16, 2017.
