The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunner reveals Inhumans may not crossover with ABC’s flagship Marvel series. ABC helped kick off the television corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and has continued to try to increase their importance. Agent Carter was short lived, while Most Wanted never got off the ground. Now, Inhumans will be their next attempt at expanding the world. With the help of IMAX, this will be a much bigger investment for the network, but as it will air on the same channel, fans have been wondering whether or not the two shows will crossover at some point.

ABC hasn’t renewed S.H.I.E.L.D. for season 5 yet to make this possible, but the showrunners are planning as if it will happen. The forthcoming new series meanwhile is in the midst of production in Hawaii and set photos have already hinted at Inhumans connecting to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a small way. However, that does not mean they will be closely tied together.

Digital Spy spoke to S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunner Jed Whedon about the possibility that the two ABC/Marvel properties could one day crossover. Unfortunately for those hoping such an event would happen in the near future, Whedon says even though they exist within the same larger universe, Inhumans will have a world of its own:

So does this mean the shows will never crossover? Not necessarily. That said, both shows are concentrating on building their own universes, but it is always possible that something could happen.

Without being able to say anything really about that show, it will have its own world, just as we tried to start our own world. Whether or not there’s a crossover, we will see.

Thanks to the latest synopsis for Inhumans, it appears that most of the first season will be taking place directly on Earth. As the Royal Family continues to make headlines in Hawaii, it will be weird for S.H.I.E.L.D. not to interfere after a certain point - assuming the team makes it out of the Framework eventually. That said, as S.H.I.E.L.D. also features a number of Inhumans on their show, if both continue, it would only seem natural for a crossover to happen at some point.

Everything is connected, and that’s fun to play with. But the point of our show is to be our show, and we want our fans to be rewarded for watching it without having to watch everything else. But we also want there to be a bigger reward for people who watch all of them, so that they’ll start to see that there’s lines connecting it. It’s more fun for people who are playing the whole game, but if you don’t, you’ll still have a great rollercoaster ride.

Marvel will see just how well television crossovers work when The Defenders premieres on Netflix this August, but after the success of The CW’s Arrowverse 4-part crossover this past year, ABC could look to do something similar, albeit smaller by bringing their two Marvel series together.
