Marvel’s Inhumans is officially over. Thanks to the corporate synergy of Disney, ABC was the first network to receive a live-action Marvel series under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella. The #ItsAllConnected mantra brought Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into the fold, while Agent Carter got two seasons of its own. But, in an effort to go bigger and double-down on Marvel content, the network teamed up with Marvel again, as well as IMAX, to breathe new life into Inhumans.
The concept was at one point part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 slate, but it didn’t take long for it to be completely removed from the movie side’s line of thinking. Despite the promise that came with IMAX’s pairing, Inhumans failed to live up to expectations from the get go. The very first photo was met with disdain and the episodes that followed didn’t change the narrative too much.
Unsurprisingly, ABC has made it official and ended Inhumans after one season. The decision was a longtime coming, even if ABC’s president said at the start of this year that they’d yet to make a verdict. This was all but a formality at this point, especially since star Anson Mount joined Star Trek: Discovery in a major role for season 2. It’d be tough to do Inhumans without Black Bolt, and now there’s officially no return in store.
Now that ABC has moved on from the show, the MCU as a whole should be able to easily forget about and move past Inhumans. The show (thankfully) made no major connections to anything else that happened in the MCU. While most expected at least some crossover with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there was only a brief mention of the Inhuman outbreak S.H.I.E.L.D.’s been dealing with for a few seasons now. If the show generated better results, a crossover probably would’ve happened, but alas, that wasn’t the case.
That said, the cancellation of Inhumans does give Marvel the ability to one day right this wrong. That chance may be quite far in the future if the Fox-Disney deal closes and the MCU is instantly populated by mutants, but as long as the MCU continues to move forward, there’s always a chance the Inhumans can be properly explored. The characters could serve as a nice bridge between the cosmic and Earth-based heroes/storylines after all. But, considering how the show was largely disliked, the longer the gap between Inhumans and another interpretation, the better.
