Thanos’ power in Avengers: Infinity War is, apparently, far greater than anyone realized as his snap not only deleted half the population of the universe, but also half the plants and animals of the universe. It seems that the destruction left behind by Thanos’ actions were more far-reaching than Marvel fans thought.

In Avengers: Infinity War, the Avengers try to prevent Thanos from collecting all the stones for the Infinity Gauntlet. If Thanos collects all the stones, he wields unlimited power. The Avengers fail to stop him, and, in the end, Thanos collects the stones into his gauntlet and uses that unlimited power immediately. All he does is snap his fingers, but that one snap makes half of the world’s population disappear. That one snap also meant the end of much of the Avengers team, too. In the film, fans had to say goodbye to Spider-Man, Black Panther, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Loki, Gamora, Winter Soldier, Star-Lord, Falcon, Doctor Strange, Groot, Mantis, Drax, Nick Fury and Maria Hill.

In an interview with Birth Movies Death, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige confirmed that it wasn’t just people that died with that finger snapping. When asked about plants and animals, Feige confirmed that half of the plants and animals of the world are now gone, too. He said, “Yes! Yes. All life.”

That leaves the question, though, of how this ultimately fits into Thanos’ plan. Thanos understood that the universe was already working with limited resources. He believed he could save the universe by ridding it of half its population. But if half of the plants and animals are gone, doesn’t that also affect the food chain and supply of the universe, too? Perhaps this is something Marvel plans on getting into during Avengers 4.

The following contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: In the first post-credits scene of that film, Marvel fans learned about that Thanos’ snap also deleted Hank Pym, Janet van Dyne and Hope van Dyne from the universe. This left Ant-Man stranded in the Quantum Realm. It sets up a large part of the story for Avengers 4, perhaps with the Quantum Realm and Scott’s time there being key to reversing what Thanos did (especially with the mention of time vortexes).

Whatever happens in Avengers 4, the world is certainly a little less itself with half of the people, animals and plants gone. Knowing that the world was even more devastated also makes the wait for the next movie a long one. Avengers 4 doesn’t release until May 2019.
