James Gunn insisted on Peter Quill fulfilling his promise to kill Gamora if Thanos ever captured her in Avengers: Infinity War, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely share.

It’s been revealed that Gunn actually wrote dialogue for the Guardians of the Galaxy in the movie to make sure that the cosmic heroes maintained their characterizations throughout Infinity War and beyond. It’s the first time that the fan-favorite outcast group has been handled by a different director, so naturally, Gunn had a say in how they will be handled. But aside from lending a helping hand with the Guardians’ lines, Avengers 3 writers share one pivotal scene in the movie that Gunn insisted on changing, and even Chris Pratt also agreed with him on this one.

In a conversation with Backstory Magazine (via The Playlist), Markus and McFeely opened up about Gunn’s involvement in Infinity War beyond being an executive producer. McFeely, in particular, divulged the one thing that the director insisted on changing on the story and it involves a key moment between Peter Quill and Gamora in the film.

The scene in question was perhaps one of the best interactions between Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana onscreen, especially considering that only minutes before that, Gamora suddenly asked Peter to do the unthinkable and kill her if Thanos got a hold of her. Despite the internal struggle, Peter was able to muster up the courage to pull the trigger - a total shocker for fans who have been preparing for Infinity War’s expected deaths, but it certainly wasn’t one of the ways that anyone predicted. In the end, Thanos intervened, leaving Quill dumbfounded, and that’s basically the last time the couple saw each other - unless both of them are trapped in the Soul World, as several Avengers 4 theories suggest.

“The only change [James] really went deep on and we had more than one conversation about was the decision by Star-Lord to shoot Gamora and then bubbles come out obviously. So we wrestled with, ‘Would it be interesting if Star-Lord could not bring himself to fulfill his promise and kill the woman he loves?’ It’s not a traditional hero arc. We were trying to get to a failure [moment] because his love for her outweighed his duty in some ways. And Gunn and Pratt were really adamant that he would do it. So we did it, and of course, it didn’t hurt our story to do it, because it’s not gonna work.”

In hindsight, it was the better move to have Peter fulfill his promise, especially if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will have him and Gamora back together and off to a brand new adventure alongside the rest of their team. The fact that Star-Lord attempted to stick by his word will only make him more dependable in Gamora’s eyes, and arguably a worthy leader of the squad because at this point, the fandom is currently frustrated at him given his inability to control his temper.
