After less than a week in theaters, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War has already passed Justice League on the worldwide box office chart. It was no secret that the MCU’s latest blockbuster was going to be a huge financial success. Kicking off the culmination of the MCU’s first 10 years of films, Infinity War promised the biggest threat to Earth’s mightiest heroes yet, in the form of intergalactic conqueror Thanos. The Mad Titan will stop at nothing to accomplish his goals, and said goals are never good.

Despite those lofty expectations, Infinity War actually managed to surpass most of them, setting new all-time records for both domestic opening weekend gross and worldwide opening weekend gross. All together, the latest Avengers adventure hauled in a massive $640 million worldwide over its first three days, soundly destroying the previous record held by The Fate of the Furious. The domestic record was less of a blowout, with Infinity War pushing past The Force Awakens by only about 10 million dollars. Still, a win is a win.

The Avengers racked up another $25 million domestically yesterday, officially out-grossing the most recent attempt at a big event superhero team-up movie, DC’s Justice League. Its troubled production infamous, Justice League was widely seen as a bit of disaster, with material shot by two different directors - Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon - ultimately leading to a film that was very inconsistent in tone and style. Justice League was also criticized heavily for its awful CGI, and bland villain Steppenwolf. To add insult to injury, Justice League’s final box office total of $657.9 million makes it the lowest grossing DCEU entry to date. And now, Iron Man and friends have moved past it on the worldwide chart in barely over a weekend. Ouch.

Looking ahead, with Justice League out of the way, this is absolutely zero reason to believe that Infinity War will fail to surpass the rest of the DCEU at the box office as well. Top DCEU film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has a worldwide gross of $873.6 million, and the chances of Infinity War not making at least $1 billion are basically nonexistent. At that point, Infinity War would also have climbed up to #6 on the all-time MCU chart.

With fellow 2018 hit Black Panther having grossed over $1.3 billion, it’s almost impossible to imagine that Avengers: Infinity War won’t top that number. The question would then become whether or not Infinity War can manage to top both Age of Ultron and the original Avengers film on the all-time chart. Doing so would require grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide, a feat only 6 movies in total have ever accomplished. Based on the film’s performance already - and overwhelmingly positive word of mouth - it’s not very hard to imagine that happening.
