Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo opened up about the Black Order’s role in the film and addressed complaints about the foursome’s limited screen time. While the Russos did a great job juggling several dozens of characters while also telling a cohesive story, there are still several components in the film that arguably could’ve been better. This inclueds the big screen portrayal of the Thanos’ minions, the Black Order consisted of Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Cull Obsidian and Corvus Glaive.
Officially revealed during last year’s D23 Expo by Josh Brolin himself, the Black Order, re-purposed in the film as Children of Thanos, acts as the intergalactic villain’s henchmen. The evil group was sent to Earth to track the Time Stone, which was with Doctor Strange and Mind Stone, which was with Vision. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to accomplish their mission as they all met their respective ends at the hands of the Avengers and their allies. Many thought that they were ultimately wasted in the film considering their complex story and impressive skills in the comics, but co-director Joe Russo explained the reason behind their decision to take out the team pretty easily.
Speaking at a high school in Iowa, documented by student and Reddit member Anewthrowaway_quest, Russo addressed the matter with regard to the Black Order being underserved in the film.
When someone chimed in, they, too, were taken out pretty quickly, Joe rebutted explaining that “Thanos is the true bad guy of the movie you don’t want the sub villains overshadowing the super villain.” Which means that his henchmen were really just minions to keep the several mini-teams of heroes occupied while the Mad Titan was busy dealing with Gamora. “We want to save him for the final showdown between him and the heroes. They weren’t easy to dispatch all of them- it certainly took a few nasty fights,” he added.
“I think people have been waiting 10 years to have the Marvel heroes together in a 2 and half hour film. So If I started to go into the history of them- that’s a whole another movie all together. I felt like they did their jobs in the film. And the audience got enough of them in the film- as much as they needed them in the film. As much as I like those characters- and as much as I like comic books I feel that if I started deaveling into their backstory it would become unwatchable- only so many characters you can keep in your head.”
Naturally, with so many characters to spend time on (on top of officially introducing Thanos), the Russos had to cut corners on some elements of the movie. But given their ability to create standout moments from every character in such a short screen time (as illustrated in Captain America: Civil War), they still could’ve done more for the Black Order. Except for Ebony Maw, who was clearly the leader of the pack, the remaining three, especially Cull Obsidian, didn’t really do anything other than engage in dialog-less fights at the start and the end of the movie. Corvus Glaive, who was supposed to be an immortal and has one of the coolest weapons, was so underserved as well.
