It doesn’t sound like fans should expect Marvel TV characters to appear in Avengers: Infinity War based on the latest comments from the directors. Marvel Studios changed the way studios looked at franchises the moment The Avengers became one of the biggest movies ever. Since the now famous post-credits scene of a smirking Thanos, they’ve been building towards Infinity War, where he’ll pose such a big threat that all heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe will unite to stop him. Or, at least most of them.
The trickiest part of the MCU for the last five years has been the influx of TV shows on ABC, Netflix, Hulu, and soon-to-be Freeform that add a ton of characters and content to the universe. They’ve abided by the rules of the movies, but have yet to be properly addressed. There’s continued to be hope that such a crossover - even on the smallest level - was coming in Infinity War, but it doesn’t appear so.
Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo spoke to French publication Premiere, where they were asked about the chance to see any TV characters make an appearance. The Russos have said before they’ve considered it all (including in our chat with them on the film’s set, which you can read here), but the logistics behind making it work is just too difficult. Here’s a translated version of what Joe Russo said:
The likelihood of characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or The Defenders making appearances in Infinity War never seemed to be great. This latest quote from Joe continues to affirm that stance, or is a clever way of stressing the difficulty in pulling this off - making it even more impressive if they actually did. The latter seems like a bit of a stretch at this point, especially since the only common thread from people on the movie and TV sides has been stating just how difficult a crossover would be.
We have considered everything. But the trick is that we already have at least sixty characters with whom we must tell a story! And it’s hard enough to communicate with Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, Scott Derrickson, Peyton Reed and James Gunn at the same time, not to add all the showrunners and TV crews to this. The latter is also led by totally different people. So it’s practically impossible. Our job is to focus on the Marvel film world and offer a satisfying climax.
It’s also easy to see where the Russos are coming from. They’ve been hired to direct Marvel Studios movies, not oversee the entire connectivity of the MCU, and they’ve got plenty of characters already. None of the TV shows or their characters’ arcs have been building towards Thanos’ arrival and another alien invasion. Plus, there’s only a handful of characters that could actually come in handy in such a fight. It would absolutely be cool to see Quake (Chloe Bennett) or Daredevil (Charlie Cox) helping people in distress for a quick cameo. But until making such a connection becomes a priority on the film side, its not going to happen. That doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t still hold out hope.
