Thanos and Gamora both got Pixar makeovers just days before the release of Incredibles 2. The latest movie from Pixar Animation had an impressive opening weekend, beating out Captain America: Civil War with over $182 million domestically and $235 million worldwide in its first three days in theaters. The long-awaited Incredibles sequel finds Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson) at home taking care of the kids, including daughter Violet (Sarah Vowell), while ElastiGirl (Holly Hunter) is out in the world being a superhero.
Avengers: Infinity War, meanwhile, tells a different kind of family tale. Thanos and Gamora’s relationship is integral to the sequel’s plot, which culminates with the Mad Titan and his adopted daughter venturing to Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone. Told through both flashbacks and modern events, the familial struggle between Thanos and Gamora is one of Infinity War’s emotional centers. And now, due to the work of one creative designer, the complex CGI and makeup used to craft the appearance of Thanos and Gamora has been translated to Pixar’s lighter, more kid-friendly animation.
Graphic designer Samuel Cheve, who also goes by “Lamuse”, originally posted the artwork of Bob Parr as Thanos to his Instagram page (below), in addition to a design of Violet transformed into a Pixar version of Gamora. You can check out both artworks below:
Cheve’s Instagram page is a trove of Infinity War-inspired artwork and mashups. Another standout piece is a depiction of Josh Brolin’s Cable with the Infinity Gauntlet, cradling a dying Deadpool as he crumbles to dust. He also mashed up Thanos with Bruce Almighty (Thanos Almighty, of course), and even the Snapchat logo. His Incredibles mashups stand out in that most of his other work is detailed and grounded in photo-realism, as opposed to the Pixar-like Thanos and Gamora designs.
Thanks to Cheve’s work, imaginative Avengers and Incredibles fans can now have a good idea of what Thanos and Gamora would look like if they were transformed into computer-animated versions for a more kid-oriented program. It’ll help Cheve gain some exposure in the sense that Incredibles 2 has taken over the box office and drew a favorable critical reaction as well. As the highest-grossing opener in Pixar history, Incredibles 2 certainly drew no shortage of viewers - and it found a worthy mashup in Infinity War, one of the biggest movies of all time.
Cheve’s Avengers/Incredibles mashup has drawn plenty of attention, and the hope for him is that it greatly increases the exposure of his Instagram page too. Incredibles 2 fans seeking a lot more of this particular kind of mashup will be disappointed, but fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and superheroes in general may find a new artist to follow.
